Editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano 1020302 Host File Editing

Introduction

Solved: The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize .

You may have seen this error at least once, if you have used WordPress. When installing a theme, plugin or uploading a image or file, you may find this dreaded message on your screen. It has nothing to do with the theme or plugin. The issue is with your server settings which limit the maximum size for uploaded files.

It’s a common error and it can be easily fixed. This error message is an indication of that the file you are trying to upload is larger than your web host allows (WordPress default file upload size is 2 MB).

The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini

Solution:

Solution is easy, you need to increase file size upload limit. You can do it yourself or ask your web host support team to increase the file size limit.

Ways you can fix it:

  1. Updating Your php.ini file
  2. Editing Your .htaccess file
  3. Editing your wp-config.php File
  4. Contact Web Hosting Support

Updating Your php.ini file

Each server has a php.ini file, typically can be found in wp-admin folder. You need to edit open that file and write your new memory limit.

Follow these steps to edit the php.ini file

    1. Log in to your web hosting account and go to cPanel
    2. Click on FILES -> File Manager
    3. Select “Document Root for:” from the Directory Selection and click on Go. (Make sure the checkbox for Show Hidden Files is checked)
    4. Go to your wp-admin folder
    5. Find a file called php.ini or php5.ini. (If you don’t see any php.ini, create a file titled php.ini)
    6. Open the php.ini file. Find these lines in the php.ini file and replace it following numbers
  1. Save the changes you made to the php.ini file
  2. Now refresh your website and try uploading the file again.

Above settings may vary based on what web hosting company you are using. Here is list of popular webhost documentation for quick reference:

Editing Your .htaccess file

If the above editing PHP.ini file doesn’t work for you, then you can edit your .htaccess file to fix this issue.

Follow these steps to edit your .htaccess file

    1. Log in to your web hosting account and go to cPanel
    2. Click on FILES -> File Manager
    3. Select “Document Root for:” from the Directory Selection and click on Go. (Make sure the checkbox for Show Hidden Files is checked)
    4. find the .httaccess file.
    5. Open the .htaccess file and or edit the following code at the bottom.
  1. Save the changes you made to the .htaccess file

Editing your wp-config.php File

If neither of these solutions works for you, you can try editing the wp-config.php file located at your websites root folder.

    1. Log in to your web hosting account and go to cPanel
    2. Click on FILES -> File Manager
    3. Select “Document Root for:” from the Directory Selection and click on Go. (Make sure the checkbox for Show Hidden Files is checked)
    4. Add the following to the very bottom of wp-config.php

On occasion you will need to edit the hosts file on your machine. Sometimes because of an attack or prank, and others so that you can simply and freely control access to websites and network traffic.

hosts files have been in use since ARPANET. They were used to resolve hosts names before DNS. hosts files would be massive documents used to aide the network name resolution.

Microsoft kept the hosts file alive in Windows networking which is why it varies very little whether used in Windows, macOS, or Linux. The syntax stays mostly the same across all platforms. Most hosts files will have several entries for loopback. We can use that for the basic example for the typical syntax.

The first part will be the location to redirect the address to, the second part will be the address that you will want to redirect, and the third part is the comment. They can be separated by a space, but for ease of reading are typically separated by one or two tabs.

127.0.0.1 localhosts #loopback

Now let’s look at accessing the hosts files in the different operating systems…

Windows 8 or 8.1 or 10

Unfortunately Windows 8 or 10 makes it annoying to open apps as administrator — but it’s not too difficult. Just search for Notepad, then right-click on Notepad in the search results list, and choose to run it as administrator. If you’re using Windows 10 this will be on the Start Menu.

If you’re using Windows 10, it’ll look more like this:

Once you’ve done so, open up the following file using the File -> Open feature.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then you can edit as normal.

Windows 7

To access the hosts file in Windows 7 you can use the following command in the Run Line to open notepad and the file.

notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Once notepad is open you can edit the file. In this example we will block Facebook. To do this just enter in the following after the # mark.

0.0.0.0    www.facebook.com

Now that you have edited your Hosts file make sure to save it.

Now notice if we try to access Facebook in IE we can’t get to the page.

We also were not able to get to it in Google Chrome… (check notes at the end). Also for more info on editing your Hosts file, check out The Geek’s article on how to create a shortcut to quickly edit your Hosts file.

Ubuntu

In Ubuntu 10.04 and most Linux distro’s you can edit the hosts file directly in the terminal. You can use your favorite editor or even open your favorite GUI text editor. For this example we will use VIM. Like Windows 7, Ubuntu’s hosts file is located in the /etc/ folder, though here it is in the root of the drive. In order to edit the file you will need to open it as root which is why we use sudo here.

Now that it is open we can edit it to redirect Facebook into nothing. You will notice that with Ubuntu there is also a section for IP6. For most needs you will only need to edit it the top section and ignore the IP6.

Now we can save the file and try to go to Facebook.com. Just like in windows we will see that we are now redirected to a site that does not exist.

macOS (Any Version)

In macOS, accessing the hosts file is very similar to Ubuntu. Begin in terminal and use your favorite editor, even is you wish to call a GUI text editor, it is easier to do so from terminal.

The file will look a bit more like Windows, only with a little less explanation. Again we are going to redirect Facebook.

This time it seems that 0.0.0.0 is a loopback and will direct you to the computers Apache test page.

Notes

There are some things to note from this walkthrough that we did notice. When tested it, Chrome did not use the hosts file in any operating system but we were able to block Facebook in Chrome by adding www.facebook.com. Also, make sure to place and extra line after the last entry for the section.

This should get you started in understanding the Hosts file and how it can help protect your computer. You can use it to block sites that you don’t want a PC to be able to access Facebook Account Hacker exe

Sometimes in order to fix a certain problem or to block a certain website on your Windows 10 PC you have to edit hosts file. Editing hosts file is relatively advanced procedure, and number of users reported “Access denied” message while trying to edit hosts file on Windows 10.

Hosts file is located in your Windows 10 installation directory, and it’s protected from unauthorized access, but if you need to edit hosts file, you can avoid “Access denied” message by following one of our solutions.

Here are some more examples of this problem:

  • Can’t edit hosts file Windows 10 – If you can’t edit the hosts file in Windows 10, it’s probably because you don’t have required permissions. We’ll explore that problem here
  • Hosts file being used by another process  – This is another common issue that prevents users from editing the host file.
  • Don’t have permission to save hosts file Windows 10 – This is the same case as the first error message.

How to edit hosts file on Windows 10 and avoid “Access denied” message

Fix: “Access denied” error in Windows 10

Solution 1 – Run Notepad as administrator

If you use Notepad as your text editor, you need to run it as administrator before you can edit the hosts file. To run Notepad as administrator and to edit hosts file, do the following:

  1. Press Windows Key S, enter Notepad. Right click Notepad from the list of results and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Once Notepad opens, choose File > Open.
  3. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc folder and make sure to change Text Documents (*.txt) to All Files. Select hosts and click Open.
  4. Make the changes you want and save them.

We have to mention that this solution should work with any other text editor, so if you don’t use Notepad, just run your desired text editor as administrator and you should be able to edit hosts file without any problems.

Alternatively, you can start Command Prompt as administrator and use it to start Notepad and edit the hosts file. To do that, follow these instructions:

  1. Press Windows Key X and choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
  2. Once the Command Prompt opens, enter the following lines and press Enter after each line:
    • cd C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    • notepad hosts
  3. Notepad will now open hosts file, and you should be able to make the necessary changes.

Solution 2 – Copy the hosts file to a different location

According to users, you can avoid “Access denied” message while editing hosts file simply by moving the file to a different location, editing it and moving it back to the original location. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and locate hosts file.
  2. Copy it to your Desktop, or any other folder that you can easily access.
  3. Open the hosts file on your Desktop with Notepad or any other text editor.
  4. Make the necessary changes and move the hosts file back to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc directory.

Solution 3 – Make sure hosts isn’t set to Read-only

By default hosts file is set to Read-only which means that you can open it, but you cannot make any changes to it. In order to fix this issue, you need to turn off Read-only mode for hosts file by doing the following:

  1. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.
  2. Locate the hosts file, right click it and choose Properties from the menu.
  3. Go to Attributes section and make sure Read-only option isn’t checked.
  4. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

Now you should be able to make the necessary changes to hosts file. After you’re finished, it might be a good idea to set hosts file back to Read-only mode again.

Solution 4 – Change the security settings for hosts

Sometimes in order to access certain files and folders, you need appropriate privileges, and the same goes for hosts file. If you’re getting “Access denied” while trying to change hosts file, you might not have full control over the file, but you can easily change that by following these steps:

Solution 5 – Use the hidden administrator account

Most system files are protected, therefore you need an administrator account in order to make changes to them. Since hosts is one of the system files, it requires an administrator account in order to edit it. If you don’t use an administrator account, you can enable hidden administrator account and use it to make the changes to hosts file. To enable hidden administrator account, do the following:

  1. Press Windows Key X and choose Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. When Command Prompt opens, enter net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter. This will activate the hidden administrator account.
  3. After you have activated the administrator account, you can switch to it, and try editing the hosts file.

After you made the changes to hosts file, you can come back to your original account, start Command Prompt as administrator again and enter net user administrator /active:no to disable the hidden administrator account.

How do I use the Hosts File - accs-net.com

The symptom given in the question may correlate strongly with this more specific problem:

$ hostname --fqdnhostname: Temporary failure in name resolution

There are different ways that this could be resolved, one of which is to add your hostname as localhost in /etc/hosts (as shown in several other answers). This may be the right thing to do in general, but it isn't the only possible resolution.

A "fully qualified domain name" may be supplied by an external DNS server or similar (if such is available on your network). In this case, sudo will not complain, despite the missing entry in /etc/hosts.

Note: sudo attempts to dereference the hostname, even though it isn't necessarily required, due to optional capabilities in the sudoers file. See sudo command trying to search for hostname.
