Security is the most ignored important aspect of computers when it comes to home users. While there are a many users that use security suites or standalone antivirus / antispyware software, they don't add to the majority. No matter the actual reason for a computer that lacks appropriate security, this practice can never work right in an environment that includes an Internet connection and the use of external storage mediums. USB flash drives, for instance, are perfect carriers of such security threats. USB Disk Security aims on providing an application that helps you defend against the potential malware traveling on USB sticks that, at some point in time, are plugged into your computer. It also keeps curious persons from getting your personal data and copy it on their USB drives. The programs brags about making use of advanced proactive detection techniques that keep threats at bay, closing the window of opportunity left open by the traditional definition update-based antivirus software. USB Disk Security is also mentioned as working in flawless harmony with any other security solution. Topping its Softpedia sub-category, this applications already has a community of fans drawn into by the slick looks and fast response upon malware detection as the majority praises these aspects. The interface provides six sections including `Protection Status`, `USB Shield`, `USB Scan`, `Data Protection`, `System Tools` or `Quarantine`. The USB Shield pops out every time a threat is being detected and allows you to delete it and also safely open your USB drive without triggering any possible virus. This is where the credibility of this software is put to the test for the first time because any modified `autorun.inf` file present on your flash drive is automatically labeled as `risky`. This is due to the nature of the detection method which does not truly scan the contents of the `autorun.inf` file for malicious code – no matter what it contains in addition to the default string is enough for this application to recommend immediate deletion. This is one big black ball considering the fact that USB Disk Security requires a fistful of dollars. You can scan your USB flash drive and apply the USB Vaccine to it by disabling the autorun feature within the USB Scan area. Once again, the application fails to detect even basic virus-infected items on the USB stick and, furthermore, it doesn't provide you with a selection menu for your inserted pen drives. These two erroneous and totally ineffective features of the software make its aura alongside positive testimonies parish when faced with reality. At this point, you may start sense the scam and look for something else - that's the best thing to do. If there's any consolation to you, USB Disk Security can lock your USB ports or flash drive in order to block unauthorized users from stealing data or even connect their USB sticks to your computer. The System Tools consist of utilities such as Disk Cleanup, Repair System or Autostart List utilities. The files you choose to delete within the USB Shield are encrypted and placed into the Quarantine section.
All in all, USB Disk Security is nothing but a bluff. Any piece of software featuring the same characteristics charging you for utilizing it cannot be considered trustworthy and completely useless DAEMON Tools Pro KeyGen 2013

Not Very Accessible for the Blind
on June 2, 2013
PC Magazine gave Webroot high marks for system protection even though it uses a far different approach than do most firewall and antimalware products. While Webroot is extremely small and is very fast, PC Magazine indicated that it caught everything thrown at it even though the detection was not necessarily at the time other products would have caught the problem. Instead of pattern matching on downloads and installed items,to Webroot watches what is happening on the system and catches suspicious activity. On my machine, Webroot identified a file called ConvertWav.exe, as malware when that executable became active and attempted to connect to the web. I agree that the acttivity was very suspicious. Since I wasn't using the product that contained the file, I uninstalled it to prevent other unsuspected activities. Note that my other anti malware products failed to identify the possible problem with this file.Due to the way Webroot works, scans that may take other anti malware products hours to complete are done in a few minutes. Another bonus is that there are no daily downloads of new virus definitions. Instead, the behavior profiles Webroot watches for are kept on the web indicating that you probably need to be connected to the web to run a scan. As I don't have a telephone modem, I can't tell whether or not needing to access the web over a dial-up connection for a few profiles has much impact on the scan.Problem for everyone:Webroot inserts the folder for Webroot in the Programs menu every time it starts. As I prefer to organize the Programs menu so I can quickly get to any program with two or three keystrokes, this unnecessary alteration of the Program menus on each start is an annoyance.I noted a couple of items that Webroot inserted in the Startup menu that indicated they were onetime installation events. In an attempt to stop the alteration of my Programs menu, I tried removing those items thinking I could just start Webroot from the Program Files if it didn't start on boot -- a very bad idea as I describe belowThe installation process puts essential startup links in the Startup menu. The product will still work if someone, like me, removes these links, but the startup will take many, many, many minutes. The vendor should place this information in the MSConfig area where recovery is fairly easy should someone turn them off. As it stands, One must uninstall and reinstall the product to restore these links.Note for blind users, One must restore the system to the point before WebRoot was installed to obtain conditions that allow it to be reinstalled - assuming you don't have sighted assistance.Problems for blind users:WebRoot has CAPTCHA test for turning protection off or for uninstalling it. If possible, the vendor should consider making this a UAC protected function or providing an option so blind people can choose to rely on UAC rather than being blocked by the CAPTCHAs test. The current CAPTCHA is not accessible. The installer doesn't use normal Windows objects making it hard to use by blind people. The vendor should consider using normal Windows objects for the install. See below for how a blind user can get around the current problem. The status and other screens do not have the option to use normal Windows objects making them virtually unusable by blind users. The vendor should consider making these screens accessible or provide alternative screens that do use standard Windows objects. See below for a way around this problem.A blind user using Jaws can install Webroot despite the apparent inaccessibility of the installation process. The contents can be viewed only using the Jaws PC cursor. On the first screen there is text saying "agree and continue". Click this text and the installation will start. The next screen asks for your e-mail address, but the edit box is not apparent - it is mentioned when first entering the screen, but it is not possible to focus on it with Jaws. To get around this, click the word "continue" near the bottom of the screen. This brings up a normal Windows dialog box saying that you must enter an e-mail address. Clicking the "OK" button returns you to the input screen with the cursor focused on that invisible edit box. Enter your e-mail address and then, using the Jaws PC cursor, move down to the bottom of the screen and click that "continue" text. Webroot will then install. At first glance, Webroot is totally inaccessible except for the few functions available through the Webroot tray item. The status screen appears to be empty except for the single word "Overview" at the top of the screen. If you set Jaws to report all graphics, you'll note many graphics, but see nothing that tells you how to use the product. If you set Jaws to speak cursor changes, you'll note that the cursor changes from an arrow to "Unknown" on some of the graphics; those are the active controls, but the vendor has failed to provide labels that allow a blind user to determine their function. The other graphics are apparently pictures of the text that tells sighted users how to use the product and provide general status information. However, there is a magic incantation that will allow a Jaws user to use this and other Webroot screens. When you have opened a Webroot screen via the tray icon, you'll normally see an empty screen or a screen filled with unlabeled graphics. To see the actual screen, you must exit Jaws and then restart. The screen will then magically become visible if you use the jaws cursor. That screen will remain visible as long as it and its subscreens remain active. Once you close the Webroot screens, you'll need to exit and restart Jaws again to view the screen contents. This behavior was encountered on two Windows 7-64 machines using Jaws 13. and one system using Jaws 14. I've found no way to use Webroot using NVDA, but one can always download and install the trial version of Jaws. That will allow you to work with Webroot for fourty minutes before needing to restart the system to use Jaws again. As one seldom need of the status or other screens once Webroot is installed and setup as desired, this shouldn't pose an insurmountable problem. When WebRoot reports a problem, all a blind user can see is the title bar for WebRoot. The trick of exiting and restarting Jaws doesn't make these screens visible to Jaws. However, the built in OCR feature can show the Jaws user what is on the screen. This function is activated by holding down the Jaws key and hitting the space bar followed by the characters O and W. Again, one must use the jaws cursor to read this screen. This is a very nice product that I'd have given a 5, but the present condition of the interface makes it very hard for a blind user to use it as it ought to be used.Given the terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding purchase of inaccessible computer software by governmental agencies, I think the vendor would be well advised to rework the interface to WebRoot so blind people can use it without sighted assistance.NVDA is a free product easily located via Google. A trial version of Jaws can be downloaded from freedom Scientific so the vendor should have no problem testing interfaces for accessibility.I just discovered that NVDA can read the status screen if the user employs the mouse. I haven't tried to discover if the other screens are also accessible via NVDA and the mouse.I missed this fact as I, as do most blind people, navigate through the cursor keys on the keyboard and seldom have a mouse attached.
I would think that a quick fix to make WebRoot accessible for both Jaws and NVDA would be to use the accessible label field available on Windows forms objects. This label is very similar to the "alt=" label for web pages Download Free Iso burning software
As you might imagine, I get questions like this all the time. As a result, I do have recommendations for security software and techniques to stay safe in various articles all over Ask Leo!
To make your life a little easier, here’s a short version that sums it all up.
Become a Patron of Ask Leo! and go ad-free!
The short-short version
Most home and small-business users who don’t want to think about it too much should simply:
Good basic protection in four steps with only one download.
Basic security software: Windows Defender
Windows Defender comes pre-installed in recent versions of Windows. It does a fine job of detecting malware, does so without adversely impacting system performance, and does so without nagging you for renewals, upgrades, or up-sells. It just does its job quietly in the background …
… exactly what you want from your anti-malware tool.
The ratings game
Every so often, Windows Defender comes under fire for rating lower than other security packages in tests published online. As a result, every so often I get push-back – often angry push-back – that Windows Defender remains my primary recommendation.
There are several reasons I stick to that position.
- No anti-malware tool will stop all malware. Malware can and does slip by even today’s highest rated packages.
- “Highest rated” changes, depending on the date, the test, and who’s doing the testing. There is no single, clear, consistent winner.
- Regardless of how the data is presented, the differences among detection rates across most current anti-malware tools is relatively small compared to other factors.
There are also some very practical reasons I continue to prefer Windows Defender.
- It’s free.
- It’s already installed in Windows 8 and later – there’s nothing you have to do.
- In practice, it rarely impacts system performance.
- It integrates with Windows Update to keep itself up-to-date.
- It has no additional agenda: it’s not going to pester you with renewals, upgrades to more powerful versions, or up-sells to tools you just don’t need.
It’s not perfect, but no security tool is.
Thus my recommendation stands. Windows Defender remains a solid, free anti-virus and anti-spyware package with minimal system impact, and should be appropriate for almost anyone.
Alternatives and additions
On the other hand, I fully recognize that Windows Defender might not be the right solution for everyone. No single product is.
This is where I run into some difficulty trying to make recommendations. The landscape keeps changing. Tools that were once clearly free, have on more than one occasion, moved to promoting their paid product so heavily that the free version virtually disappears. People download and install programs thinking they are truly free only to discover, instead, a free trial, or a free download (if you want to keep it past a certain length of time you’re required to hand over money).
Some programs have become as much self-promotion tools as they are anti-malware tools, bombarding you with sales pitches and upgrade offers to the point of getting in the way of your work.
Things keep changing. So to the extent that I mention specific tools below, caveat emptor – “let the buyer beware”. I can’t honestly predict that the tools will remain recommendation-worthy.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has evolved over the years from a tool that defied categorization – not really anti-virus, not really anti-spyware, but still catching things that other tools did not – to a full-featured anti-malware package. What’s important is that it continues to have a very good track record of removing troublesome malware that other packages sometimes miss.
Spybot Search and Destroy is one of the longest running and highly regarded anti-spyware tools out there. Like Malwarebytes, it has also expanded to be a more fully-featured anti-malware tool. I used it for many years myself back in its anti-spyware days.
AVG, Avira, and Avast, or the “three AV’s”, as I like to call them, are three other free solutions that I’ve recommended over the years.
Caveats with all
I need to reiterate some important points.
- I’m referring to the FREE version of each of these tools, not the “Free Trial”. In several cases they are two completely different downloads. A “free trial” is just that – a trial, typically of a more fully-featured product. Unless you know otherwise, the truly FREE version of these tools would be my recommendation.
- Regardless of which you download, you are still likely to be faced with upgrade and up-sell offers to a more fully featured version, or even an ongoing subscription. Unless or until you know you want this, always decline.
- Speaking of declining: when installing any of these products, always choose custom installation – never the default. You may well get toolbars and other unrelated software you simply don’t need or want. Consider using Ninite to install these tools – all are available there.
If your machine becomes infected with malware of some sort, there’s a good chance that you won’t be able to actually download anything, because the malware will prevent it. That means you won’t be able to download the latest update of your anti-malware tools, or perhaps be able to run them at all. When that happens, you need an offline malware scanner.
An offline scanner is simply a complete anti-virus and anti-spyware scanning tool that you download and burn to CD or DVD, or place on a USB memory stick, using another computer. You then boot the infected machine from the media you created and run the scanner. The infected Windows doesn’t run at all and the scanner can check, change, or repair more than the a normal scanner could.
I recommend Windows Defender Offline for this purpose. Unfortunately, it’s not something you download and keep ready to use. In order to make sure you’re running the most recent update of the tool and its database of malware, it’s important to download it when you need it.
For home and business use, I recommend the use of any good NAT router as a firewall. They don’t have to be expensive, and are one of the simplest approaches to keeping your computer safe from network-based threats. If all the computers on the local network side of the router can be trusted, there’s no need for an additional software firewall.
When traveling, or if you don’t trust the kids’ computer connected to the same network as your own, I recommend turning on the built-in Windows Firewall. In recent versions of Windows, it’s likely already on by default. There’s often no harm in leaving it on, but it can occasionally get in the way of some local machine-to-machine activities like sharing files and folders.
I strongly recommend you back up regularly.
In fact, I can’t stress this enough. 99% of the disasters I hear about could be completely avoided simply by having up-to-date backups.
Macrium Reflect and EaseUS Todo are the backup tools I currently use and recommend. More on backing up here: How Do I Back Up My Computer
Keep your computer – Windows as well as all the applications you run – as up-to-date as possible. That means being sure that Windows Update is running. More on that in this article: How do I Make Sure that Windows is Up-To-Date
The vast majority of computer infections we hear about are due to individuals who have not kept their operating system or applications up-to-date with the latest available patches.
