Advanced security enhancements include Bit-locker and Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC), which hardens the operating system and protects your server environment to ensure a solid foundation for appliance development.

New virtualization tools, management enhancements, Server Core and features designed specifically to work with embedded devices or client computers running Windows 7, all help save time and reduce costs, making Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 a highly robust and reliable foundation on which to deliver dedicated solutions and appliances.

Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 Enhancements

Server Core
Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 includes an even more granular definition of server roles than in previous Windows Server operating systems. This finer granularity allows OEMs to install only the operating system components and features that are needed to support their applications and services, which results in a more efficient footprint and reduces the attack surface on the solution.

The Server Core installation option further reduces the attack surface of your solution by eliminating the graphical user interface on Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2. In addition, Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 Server Core installation now supports more server roles, such as Microsoft.NET connection software.

Virtualization
With its built-in server virtualization technology, Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 helps OEMs increase hardware utilization while running both new and legacy functionality side-by-side in order to ensure workload isolation.

  • Hyper-V - Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 includes the much-anticipated update to Microsoft’s virtualization technology Hyper-V, which was designed to augment both existing virtual machine management as well as to address specific challenges around server migration.
  • Live Migration - Hyper-V is an important technology for one of Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2’s marquee features, Live Migration. With Hyper-V version 1.0, Windows Embedded Server 2008 is capable of Quick Migration, which moves VMs between physical hosts in milliseconds, enabling invisible migration operations to connected users.

BitLocker
BitLocker allows OEMs using Windows Embedded Enterprise and Windows Embedded Standard 2011 to encrypt removable drives, such as eSATA hard disks, USB hard disks, USB thumb drivers and compact flash drives. This allows the same level of protection for data stored on removable media as the operating system volume.

Active Directory helps centralize the consistent deployment of the BitLocker feature across the entire OEM solution, including the operating system volume and removable drives which use Windows Embedded Enterprise, Windows Embedded Standard 2011 and Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2.

Read-Only Domain Controller
Read-only Domain Controller (RODC) in Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 improves OEM device security and reduces risk of stolen information. Furthermore, BitLocker to encrypt removable drives in Windows Embedded Enterprise or Windows Embedded Standard 2011, can be centralized and deployed consistently, working together with Active Directory in Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2, helping OEMs deliver secure systems.

Agile VPN
The Agile VPN feature allows a VPN to have multiple paths between points in the VPN tunnel, connecting embedded devices running Windows Embedded Enterprise or Windows Embedded Standard 2011 to servers running Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2. In the event of failure, Agile VPN automatically uses another network path to maintain the existing VPN tunnel in order to avoid interruption of connectivity. This allows OEMs to offer robust connectivity for their smart, connected and service-oriented solutions.

Direct Access
DirectAccess is a new technology built into Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2, Windows Embedded Enterprise and Windows Embedded Standard 2011. It allows corporations to configure a secure communication path between remote devices and centralized data in headquarters, without going through VPN authentication.

PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems)
Medical devices in the field can access PACS based server appliances directly, thereby eliminating the need for VPN authentication and allowing for easier connectivity.

Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 Editions

Windows Embedded Server 2008 R2 is available in both Standard and Enterprise editions. The Enterprise edition supports larger memory and failover clustering and has enhanced virtualization rights.

Each of these editions has three SKUs:

  • Windows Embedded Server - Full Server capabilities for OEMs with great flexibility in the design and use of their server product.
  • Essentials (Server Appliance)  - The Essentials SKU has the same key features as the Standard product, but has license provisions applicable to supporting server appliances that OEMs build which have no keyboard, video or mouse connected ongoing.
  • Telecommunications - Telecommunications system manufacturers that provide systems the following types of systems can make use of the Windows Server products that have license provisions specific to their needs and a price which will allow them to create very price-competitive solutions.

Windows Server 2008 R2から「Windows Time」サービスが手動となっています

「Windows Time」サービスが手動となっており、システム起動時に「Windows Time」サービスが起動しないことにより

W32tmコマンドで以下のようにNTPサーバーを設定しようとしてもエラーになります

> w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:ntp.nict.jp /update

次のエラーが発生しました。 そのサービスを開始できませんでした。 (0x80070426)

これは「Windows Time」サービスが手動になっており、サービス開始していないためw32tmコマンドで設定できない状況です。

Windows Server 2008 R2では「Windows Time」サービスが手動になっており開始されていないと言うことはNTPサーバーで時刻同期しないということでしょうか?

GUIの「日付と時刻」より「インターネット時刻」を見ると、次回時刻同期する時間の表示がありません

これも「Windows time」サービスが開始されていないことに原因があります

「設定の変更」ボタンより「今すぐ更新」を押すと「Windows time」サービスが開始され、先ほどと表示が変わります

これならWindowsが時刻同期をしてくれていそうですね。

Windows が時刻同期をしてくれるかどうかは、「Windows time」サービスが開始されているかどうかです

Windows Server 2008 R2では自動でNTP時刻同期は行わないのでしょうか?

実は、

Windows Server 2008 R2の「windows time」サービスは自動で開始になりませんが

NTP時刻同期をしてくれているんです

どこで「windows time」サービスを開始しているかというと、デフォルトのタスクスケジュールに設定があります

スタンドアロン環境の Windows Time サービスは、システム起動時に、トリガー起動サービスによってサービスは開始されません。

ただし、タスク スケジューラ ライブラリに登録されている Time Synchronization によって、毎週日曜日、午前 1 時に、Windows Time サービス は起動され時刻同期を行うため、ずっと起動しっぱなしのサーバーならば既定の設定で問題はありません。

実は

Windows Server 2008 R2のワークグループでは「Windows time」サービスを「自動」としてもシステム起動時に開始されません

これはWindows server 2008 R2の仕様的な動作です

サーバーを常に起動しておくわけではなく、どうしても「Windows time」サービスを自動で開始させたい場合は

以下のページの回避策方法を行います

ただ、見て頂ければわかるように、デフォルトではなく特殊な方法になりますので、可能ならばデフォルト動作にしておいた方が良いかと思います。

番外

Windows Server 2008 R2で複数NTPサーバーを指定したい場合、

GUIの「日付と時刻」より「インターネット時刻」で設定しようとするとエラーになります


複数NTPサーバー指定したい場合は、w32tmコマンドを使用する必要があります

>w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntp.nict.jp time.windows.com" /update

コマンドは正しく完了しました。

w32timのヘルプを見ますと

  manualpeerlist:<ピア>

                - 手動ピアの一覧を指定されたピアに設定します。DNS および

                  IP アドレス、またはその両方をスペースで区切った一覧です。

                  複数のピアを指定する場合は、このスイッチを引用符で

                  囲む必要があります。

とスペースで区切れば良いことが書かれています。

確認として以下のコマンドを実行すると

With Windows Server 2008 R2 being the first x64 only version of Microsoft’s popular server operating system the maximum memory configurations are much simpler to remember.  It will likely be a while yet before the x32 version of Windows Server 2008 is stopped being deployed fully in production environments meaning that you’ll have to keep tabs on how much memory each version and build type can take.

Windows Server 2008 R2 and later releases of the product ship with a virtualization platform called Hyper-V, which works quite well since it’s built into Windows. Today we’re going to show you how to install it.

Note: this is part of our ongoing series teaching IT administration basics, and might not apply to everybody.

Installing Hyper-V

Launch the Server Manager, by clicking on the pinned icon or using the Start Menu.

When the Server Manager launches, right-click on roles and select Add Roles from the context menu.

Click next on the Before You Begin screen.

Now select Hyper-V from the list of available roles and click next.

Click next to skip past the Introduction to Hyper-V, now select the network adapter that you want to use to create a virtual network for your virtual machines, then click next.

You will be asked to confirm that you want to install Hyper-V, just click the install button to kick off the installation.

When the installation is complete you will be told that you need to restart the server, you can do so by clicking on the link.

When your server has restarted you will be able to manage Hyper-V from Server Manager under the roles node, you can also manage it by launching a dedicated Hyper-V MMC from the Administrative Tools section of the Start Menu windows 8 serial generator

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition evaluation copy with 180-day trial VHD images are available to download from Microsoft.

Evaluating any version of Windows Server 2008 R2 software does not require entering a product key, however will require activation within 10 days. Failing to activate the evaluation will cause the licensing service to shut the machine down every hour. Once activated, the evaluation will run for 180 days. After this time, you will need to uninstall the evaluation software and reinstall a fully-licensed version of Windows Server 2008 R2.

The only catch is that this installation requires Hyper-V, you will need to have a base install of Windows Server 2008 (x64) or Windows Server 2008 R2, running Hyper-V. You can find more details about using Windows Server 2008 R2 VHD with Hyper-V here.
